2011 UK Census: eXtensible Markup Language (XML)

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a specification for creating custom markup languages. It is extensible because it allows a user to define the mark-up elements. It is used to aid information systems in sharing structured data, especially via the Internet, and to encode documents.
