Census Outputs are in the early stages of research and development work to discover, design and plan for the future census data delivery systems via the web. This work is set in the context of on online environment that has changed considerably since the last Census, and changed rapidly even in the last two years.
Early work has involved a number of workshops and meetings between ONS Census and leading academic experts in the fields of internet systems and statistical data delivery. The aim of these has been to begin to establish a suitable approach to web dissemination. Any eventual Census systems will be strongly integrated in the next generation of ONS corporate web delivery. These workshops provide an opportunity for ONS IT personnel to exchange their ideas about the future direction of development with experts involved in Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded short term projects to research how technology might improve the web dissemination of Census data. Both parties are committed to the underlying principle of providing the best means to share both the data and the tools to access it, in the most open manner possible. The aim to improve the quantity, quality, timeliness and usefulness of the data motivates the direction of all initiatives and concepts. We will be addressing this developing area of work more over the next few months in this blog, where we will highlight significant new ideas being explored and documented in the wiki. We intend to use the wiki as an area in which ONS personnel and expert users and developers can begin to collaboratively exchange ideas and begin to develop early specifications in the areas of data exchange formats (SDMX for example) and the specification and development of exchange tools and protocols (APIs). We encourage you to check the wiki as it develops over time, and either join in and contribute ideas or comment on those being developed. «« Previous post Printed products - some thoughts and questions See other posts similar to this one: |

Developing web delivery systems
IT seems to me that the question is to look at what is wanted, before deciding what to offer.
My guess is that for most people in a home \ school based role that a NeSS like website will provide what is required. For greater access of data a NOMIS approach for users who want more data and less analysis \ mapping. Over this will be those who want the census output in bulk and little extra.
Whether you agree with my conclusion about groupings and requirements, there does require a clarity when researching the requirements, of who the answer is aimed at, in order that the question can be properly asked of and targeted at the appropriate responder
